SEO vs AI Search Optimization: What Changes and What Stays the Same?
Editorial responsibility: SearchCub
SEO improves your visibility in search; AI search optimization focuses on being found and cited in generated answers, using many of the same foundations. The main change is how people encounter your content: they may read an answer that draws on several pages before deciding whether to visit yours.
You may see this work called AIO, GEO, or AEO. People use these labels differently. Here, “AI search optimization” means improving your content's usefulness and visibility in search experiences that generate answers, such as Google's AI Overviews and Microsoft's Copilot.
What changes for a website owner?
Question | Traditional search results | AI-generated answers |
|---|---|---|
How might a reader find you? | A listing linking to your page | A source link within or alongside an answer |
What might they see first? | Your title and a search snippet | An explanation combining information from several sources |
What should you measure? | Search visibility, visits, and useful actions | Citation or impression reports, then visits and useful actions |
What does visibility prove? | Your listing appeared | Your content was surfaced; it does not prove a visit or recommendation |
For a coffee-grinder review, a traditional result might lead a reader straight to your comparison. An AI answer might draw on your noise measurements while using another source for price. That makes a specific, well-explained finding valuable even when it is only one part of the reader's question.
What stays the same?
Your pages still need to be accessible, understandable, and worth reading. Google treats generative AI search as part of SEO. A page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet, and its site must be included in Search generative AI features. Inclusion is the default setting; a child property can inherit its parent’s choice. Eligibility does not guarantee appearance.
Google also says you do not need special AI markup, an llms.txt file, or a particular article length to appear. Follow its guide to optimizing for generative AI search before investing in a supposed shortcut.
Bing's webmaster guidelines likewise connect SEO best practices with visibility across Bing, Copilot, and AI search. Improving the underlying website serves both kinds of discovery.
Four practical changes to your writing workflow
Start with the reader's decision. Use SearchCub to explore a topic's keywords and inspect their search results. “Coffee grinder” and “quiet coffee grinder for an apartment” call for different answers. Decide which question your page can answer convincingly before expanding the outline.
Put the answer before the background. State your recommendation, definition, or result early, then explain its limits. For a grinder comparison, show the measured noise levels and test conditions before a long description of each machine.
Make the evidence inspectable. Include your own measurements, a relevant screenshot, or a worked example. Label estimates and explain how you obtained a result. A comparison table should help someone choose, with enough context to understand the trade-offs.
Maintain one useful page. Improve it when the product, evidence, or reader's next step changes. A review that names the tested model, test date, and method gives readers something concrete to assess. Avoid publishing near-identical answers for every wording variation.

Measure appearances separately from outcomes
Google's Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, with breakdowns such as page, country, and device. An impression means a link was shown; it does not establish a click.
Bing's AI Performance report reports citations and cited pages across supported Microsoft AI experiences. Those counts describe citation activity, not a universal AI ranking.
Track those reports alongside your site's visits and meaningful actions, such as a signup or download. If citations rise while signups stay flat, inspect the cited pages and their next steps before producing more content. Treat occasional manual prompt checks as examples, not a stable position you own.
